Balsam, Peru Properties:
Grounding *Warming/Relaxing *
“Balsam of Peru is an antiseptic that fights bacteria, promotes wound healing, and kills parasites. When taken internally, it helps to loosen phlegm. It has been used in the United States since 1820 for bronchitis, laryngitis, and diarrhea, and as the basis of cough mixtures. Today it is used exclusively in topical preparations for treatment of wounds, ulcers, and scabies, and can be found in hair tonics and antidandruff preparations, and as a natural tragrance in soaps, detergents, creams, lotions, and perfumes. ”
Balsam of Peru relieves various kinds of soreness and inflammation through its high content of volatile oil. One of the oil's components, cinnamaldehyde, slows the multiplication of the cells that release inflammation-causing chemicals. Another of the oil's components, benzaldehyde, slows the release of inflammatory chemicals from these cells. Together, these compounds ease the dull ache of sore muscles. 1
The name Peru balsam arose from the fact that it was originally shipped to Europe from Peru.
Balsam of Peru is a resin taken from either of two species of the balsam tree. Myroxylon balsamum, which provides balsam of Tolu, is native to Colombia, Peru, and Venezuela. Myroxylon pereira, which provides Peru balsam, is found not in Peru but in Central America. Both species of balsam are tall, beautiful, jungle trees that are tapped like rubber trees to yield the vanilla-scented resin. They are also known for their valuable , mahogany-like wood. The process of extraction produces three grades of a balsamic and aromatic resin
