Acne, Herbs For Homemade Treatments

Detoxification: Drinking detoxifying herbal teas made from burdock and dandelion root helps the body dispose of skin bacteria, toxins and excess hormones that are the root causes of acne and other eruptive skin conditions. White, Linda B. M.D. Cleavers acts as a diuretic and blood purifier. Regular use detoxifies the body, treating an underlying cause of chronic skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis and acne. (Grieve, Maud)

Calendula flower is a gentle astringent, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory skin wash that can improve the complexion and relieve acne. Use calendula flower tea, calendula oil, or one cup of fresh calendula blossoms simmered in two cups of milk to nourish the skin.

Essential oil therapy is simple and effective on acne prone skin. Acne responds to gentle essential oil treatments that are much lighter and less harsh than over-the-counter chemicals. Sandalwood's astringent action helps with acne and other inflammatory skin conditions. Juniper oil makes a very good aromatic water for cleansing and toning the skin. As an astringent and antiseptic juniper is good for oily skin and acne. Applying lemon juice or a few drops of lemon oil to facial blemishes is a popular form of treating acne, but be careful you don't over do it and irritate your skin. Applying a thin layer of aloe vera gel will help ease discomfort caused by painful skin irritations and acne. Add a few drops of chamomile to aloe gel to help calm inflammation.

Juniper oil makes a very good aromatic water for cleansing and toning the skin. As an astringent and antiseptic juniper is good for oily skin and acne. Juniper stimulates circulation and acts as a blood purifier, making it useful for other skin conditions such as eczema, dermatitis, and perhaps psoriasis. (Tisserand,Robert B. "Art of Aromatherapy") You can use other astringent essential oils such as lemon, , lavender , and tea tree as well. Blend them with a light facial oil like almond, rosehips or grapeseed to tone the skin after washing. Lavender or tea tree essential oils can be used undiluted for acne, just dot a few drops onto individual blemishes with a cotton swab as needed.
