What is Spruce Oil ?

Properties & Uses:
Congestion *Uplifting *Winter Holidays *

Spruce essential oil is steam distilled from the needles of the spruce tree. It has a sweet balsamic, evergreen aroma with a pleasant hint of fruit.

Spruce essential oil, being antiseptic, antimicrobial, and having expectorant properties, it is used in respiratory conditions like bronchitis, coughs, and colds, to break up congestion.

It blends well with rosemary, cedarwood, pine, clary sage, and lavender. Spruce is ideal in air fresheners, humidifiers and inhalers, as well as household cleaners. Substitute it for peppermint in the Bronchitis blend, that is excellent for steam inhalation, or use in a diffuser.

Botanical Information - Rituals & History : Spruces are evergreen conifer trees, popular as Christmas trees due to their symmetrical narrow shape.
Native Americans in eastern North America once used the thin, pliable roots of some species for weaving baskets and for sewing together pieces of birch bark for canoes. See also Kiidk'yaas for an unusual golden Sitka Spruce sacred to the Haida people.
